RSA needs your help The Richmond-Waimea RSA is encouraging members of the public to carry small change on Thursday, as the annual Poppy Day fundraiser appears to have declined in recent years, with less people having cash on them. Poppy Day has been part of the New Zealand calendar since 1922, making it one of the oldest nationwide appeals. All of the money raised in Nelson-Tasman will stay in the region, and be used for RSA welfare to support ex-service people like Rex

Waters, who fought in World War 2. “They can help with the medical bills. Once you get past 90 years old you want a little bit of help sometimes,” he says. “As you get older you get more things wrong with you. I’m just waiting to go for a cataract now.” Rex, who was born in the Tutaki Valley near Murchison, flew Lancaster aeroplanes in England during 19431945. Volunteers will be on Queen St, outside Kmart and in the Richmond Mall, selling poppies this Thursday.

‘Sneaky strategy’ threatens school Salisbury School in Richmond is under threat from a "sneaky and underhand" strategy aimed at "strangling the school by stealth", according to Nelson-based Labour MP Maryan Street. Last week the Waimea Weekly revealed that Salisbury School's roll is falling at an alarming rate with just 17 students left and another four expected to leave at the end of this term. wheelchairs mobility scooters walker/canes electric beds and hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

That represents a significant decline with the roll falling from 71 at the same time in 2011 to 43 in 2012 and just 21 last year and Maryan says she is shocked by those numbers. "I went to the school's last barbecue for the season last Thursday and discovered what the roll was now. I was very shocked, especially as it was blindingly obvious that if the school was given the chance to respond to the huge list of peo-

‘Sneaky strategy’ threatens Salisbury School FROM PAGE 1 But the school fought the decision and it stayed open when the High Court ruled last year that placing girls in a boys residential college was unlawful and did not take into account the girls’ safety. Salisbury is not out of the woods yet.” Hekia Parata declined to comment, but the Ministry of Education’s Katrina Casey says “there is no plan to close Salisbury School” despite the “fluctuating” roll. “The school is part of the network of schooling available and there has been no discussion about the point at which the

school will be considered untenable.” Katrina says the school’s roll is “fluctuating” because parents of children with special education needs are taking advantage of the intensive wrap-around services that are increasingly available in their home communities. There are presently 221 students enrolled in the wrap-around service throughout the country, including 38 girls.

Tasman District Traffic Alcohol Group Police caught two repeat drink-drivers over the weekend, both on the roads in the early hours of the morning. At 3.30am on Saturday a Richmond man with 15 previous drink-driving convictions was stopped in Richmond and found to have excess breath alcohol. At the same time on Sunday morning a

car failed to stop for Police on Nile St in Nelson. Sergeant Dave Lauer of the Traffic Alcohol Group says the driver fled at high speed and crossed over the one lane bridge. “The car became airborne for about 15 metres and took out its sump when it landed, before crashing through a Give

Burglars broke into the Richmond Mall via the roof, before entering two shops and stealing cash. “That’s a lot of haircuts to recoup that [stolen money] and when people just take from you it’s a lot of work,” she says. “You don’t expect them to come through the roof. Who knows the minds of these people and what they do?” The damage to the Richmond Mall is likely to cost $2000, says Belinda. Because it was raining, some water leaked through the hole in the roof. Belinda has already been in discussions with Nelson Alarms about how they can prevent access onto the roof from members of the public.

“We will be blocking off that area in some way or form so people can’t access it. Apart from this, there are some children that come onto the roof and put cones on it and it’s quite dangerous. “We’ve got fans, air-con units and skylights and if people walk on the wrong area they can fall right through to the mall. It’s not a play place.” Police say a break-in through the roof was not a common occurrence at all. They have conducted scene examinations and are reviewing CCTV footage.

Richmond Mall is upping security after burglars climbed onto the roof of the mall and cut through the ceiling, before stealing from two retailers last Tuesday night. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says the offenders only got away with the money that was in the tills of Cuts@Once and The Body Shop, which totalled $800. “It looks like they’ve gone through the air-con vent. Who would think someone would go on to the roof and cut through it?” says Belinda. Police and mall management were unaware of what the offenders knew about the two retailers, but Belinda says that both Cuts@Once and The Body Shop did not have an alarm operating that night. “The two stores that they targeted are some of the few that don’t have alarms or sensors and the fact they knew that they’re leaving the money in the tills was like they’ve been under observation.” A spokesperson from Cuts@ Once says it was “really disruptive” to business.

Queen St upgrade ‘critical’ The first stage of the upgrade of Richmond's main street is underway and the project is “critical” for the town with the bottom of the current stormwater pipes so old the bottom of them has worn out. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and councillor Judene Edgar say completing the project will be critical to the future growth of the town. The estimated $8 million upgrade of Queen St is one of the major projects in the council's long term plan and flood modelling is already underway, with the design stage timed for 2014-2015 and construction from 2015 to 2016. Although the council has cut a number of projects from next year's draft annual plan to reduce debt, Richard and Judene say the Queen St upgrade "is not an optional luxury item" .

"There's a perception that the upgrade is an optional, luxury item designed to beautify Queen St but that perception is wrong," says Judene. "The main reason for the upgrade is to replace the street's stormwater system so we can prevent a repeat of the flooding that hit Queen St businesses in April last year." Richard labels the project as "one of the most compelling infrastructure upgrades for council" and says it cannot be delayed any longer. "The stormwater pipes are past their use by date and the floods we have had over the last two years underlined this. It's a real issue for Richmond and it needs to be resolved." The council's programme delivery manager, Russell McGuigan, says the aim of the project is to "have a stormwater system

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz that takes a 20 year flood and a secondary flow path that uses the road as a river that takes a 100 year flood". He says the existing stormwater system is inadequate while the road is higher in some places than the shops making them vulnerable to flooding. "The stormwater is so old the bottom of some of the pipes have worn out," Russell says. "We put a CTV camera in to have look a while ago and it fell right out the bottom." Although the underground work will be a priority, Judene says it makes sense to upgrade the road, footpaths, parking spaces

and other streetscape features "while we have bare earth". The beautification elements have only been allocated $200,000 of the $8million budget. "There are a lot of different aspects to this project and they all feed into it." Judene says it will be critical for council to consult the community about the project and they plan to form a stakeholder working group with retailers and businesses to provide feedback. Once the design stage has been completed, work will commence in 2015-2016 and Russell says that will take less than a year. It is likely that contractors will be working at night to minimise disruption to retailers and shoppers on Queen St. "At no point will the street be stopped and that's a very important part of our planning.”

MOVIE NIGHT: Seth Delport, Jess Quiney, Judah Delport and Tenielle Delport at the Grace Church Family Movie Night on Saturday. The family movie night was a “great success” with dozens of families turning up on the rainy evening to enjoy the animated movie, “Planes”. College students take on business Underwater timers for swimmers, multi-function tools for sports shoes and high-tech school bags were just some of the innovative products developed by Waimea College year 10 and 11 students for the by the Young Enterprise Trust’s BP Business Challenge. Seventy students enlisted for last week’s challenge which involved forming companies to research, design, manufacture and market a hypothetical product. The three-day challenge ended on Friday when the companies presented their business plan to a panel of judges who said they were all impressed by the young entrepreneurs. Student and chief executive of Dive In Time, Olivia Wells, says their company designed an underwater timing device for swimmers. The device featured a digital monitor worn like a watch, that interfaced with a computer to display the swimmer’s speed, lap times, laps and distance - it also received input from the swimmer’s coach. “Caitlin (Delany) is a swimmer and she thought it would be a really useful thing to have, so we developed it from there,” Olivia says. “The first thing we had to do

y r a d n e g e L ! s g n i Sav Last week we were really disappointed to catch 16 drink drivers in our weekend operation and the district commander was quoted in the media saying we would be keeping a close eye on this. This past weekend we had the Traffic Alcohol Group working from 3am on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, and on both days they came across drivers who I consider a real risk to public safety. The first, a 53 year old Richmond man with 15 previous convictions for drink-driving, blew 782 mic, almost double the legal alcohol limit. He was out and about at 3.30 am. At exactly the same time on Sunday morning they came across a young man, who at just 22 years of age, already had four previous convictions for drink driving. When people keep making the same stupid decisions as these two clearly have, it really worries me that it's only a matter of time before they kill or maim some innocent person. As it was the younger of these two drivers continued to demonstrate his poor decision-making abilities by fleeing from the officer at high speed and crashing seconds later. Thankfully he was unharmed in the crash, however he has done significant damage to other people's property. My staff have the unfortunate job of dealing with the repercussions of other people's poor decisions on virtually a daily basis and it can be a very unpleasant job. Families' and friends' worlds crumble before their eyes and even innocent bystanders with no connection to the parties involved suffer from the trauma of what they have seen. None of this has to happen and the solution is simple - if you're going to drink make a plan for getting home that doesn't involve driving. If you know someone who is regularly taking risks by drinking and driving, give us a call and hopefully we can stop them before too much damage is done.

Air New Zealand: Would probably be in the best interest of Air NZ to offer a simple flight discount for “medical” related flights, such as those specified requiring travel by DHB. This is simple enough to do, so the real question is why would a subsidised airline (supported in part by tax money) not offer discounts for DHB related flights? Moreover, the ideology that keeps being presented that “free market” will address the need/ issue is pathetic, as anyone who has taken Macroeconomics knows full well there is no such thing as free market. Air NZ, shame on you for not even trying to address the obvious need for medical related travel dictated by DHBs. I’m not suggesting everyone can just get 20 per cent discount on flights because they are visiting a hospital, but when DHBs define the requirement. ACC covers the medical costs, it is serious price gouging that keeps airlines ticketing travellers at that rate. nelsoniantraveler (via nelsonweekly.co.nz). I read your article with interest. Our experience with Air NZ, my husband and I booked Nelson to San Francisco return. I made a mistake and booked the first part Auckland to Nelson instead of Nelson to Auckland. As we were flooded out of our home, we did not print electronic tickets until a week before we were due to leave. We then picked up the error. They charged us $680 as we had to rebook

a whole new flight one way to Auckland we were given a refund of $10 each for our bags. This was last year and was a bitter experience considering we were flying all the way to San Francisco with them. We had insurance but this did not cover my mistake. N Robertson. Please keep up the reporting on the Air NZ costs. We are among the many who have regular commuters in the family, so my interest is obvious. The cancellation of ‘Starfish’ will make it more difficult. Anyway, I really only wanted to thank you for highlighting other aspects of the Air NZ pricing. We have plenty of eye-watering price stories but I’m sure you have many. Many Thanks, Belinda Reburn.

Salisbury School’s declining roll: Declining roll (which the Ministry controls) is just another way for the Ministry to shut this school down. For any struggling parent who needs to get their daughter into this school, you actually have the right to insist this is the only appropriate option you will accept. I have dealt with the Ministry for my own son and have had success through the Residential Schools McKenzie (closed by Ministry) and Westbridge. Residential Schools have skilled resources 24/7 and they can influence positive behavioural changes. As a parent you simply don’t have the energy and patience to provide the specialist sup-

I can’t see how it can stay open with so few pupils. Brenda Kenny. How much is it costing to run for a mere 17 students? Alison Lonsdale. The government has changed the rules for eligibility of enrolment. Of course the roll has decreased. It is such a pity that the people who make these decisions do not realise the benefits so many girls and families have received from Salisbury. Salisbury will be forced to close and the so-called wrap-around services will also cease after a period of time, and then what? Carol Stewart. Hekia couldn’t close it before so they’ve changed tack to make it harder to get in. That’s not to say their services are needed any less, it means national have invented criteria that is harder to reach. Sharon Nicholls. Holy moly. Had no idea there were only 17 pupils. And people here fought so hard

They were prevented from taking enrolment while there was a chance it was closing, now it’s staying open I’m sure the roll will increase again. Jolene Rushbrooke.

Trust gives a real life history lesson Primary school students have been given a heck of a history lesson and from this weekend it’s open to the public. The Dramatix Theatre Development Trust – made up of locals – has built a reputation for its Anzac Experience, formally called Lest We Forget, held each year around Anzac Day. But this year they’ve added a new dimension with night tours of a World War trench, as well as a history lesson for primary schools. Organiser TJ Ramsay says the school tours, which are running this week, have been a huge hit. “It’s very real and very scary for them, but they come out pumped

and the teachers tell me they want to learn more when they get back to school, so that’s what it’s all about.” The new night-time Trench Tours at Founders Heritage Park are R16 and will be held this Saturday and Sunday. They are the third part of the living history event with the Anzac Experience to start on Anzac Day. This year it will feature a reconstruction of the Tapawera Training Camp, complete with drill and kit inspections. Booking for the night tours are essential and are $10 per person. For bookings or information, email dramatix@dramatix.co.nz

Four reasons to rethink trail cuts

OPINION: There are four very compelling reasons for the Tasman District Council to back pedal on its decision to cut $600,000 from the Tasman Great Taste Trail’s budget for 2014-2015. The first reason is simple. Money. A staggering 10,847 riders were counted riding past just one point on the trail near the Waimea Inlet last summer and many of them would have stopped at cafes, shops, motels, camping grounds and wineries along the way. And that economic spin-off will only increase once the 175 kilometre loop is completed and can be marketed internationally as a tourist destination. If councillors have any doubts about the economic benefits of cycle trails they only need to look at the Otago Rail Trail which recorded an 11 per cent growth in numbers last year despite increasing competition from other trails around the country and injected $14 million a year into the regional economy. The second reason is that the trail is generating so many social and health benefits with hundreds of families from around the region getting on their bikes and spending quality time together. Legions of older residents are also joining regular riding groups on the trail, improving their well-being and fitness. Although it is harder to put a dollar figure on these benefits, they are just as important, if not more important than generating tourist dollars because a happier, healthier society is priceless. Reason three is that the cycle trail is providing a safer option for so

Simon Bloomberg

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

many cycle commuters, especially children who use it to ride to school. A New Zealand Transport Agency study showed that 60 per cent of pupils at Broadgreen Intermediate, which is near the Railway Reserve, cycled to school. That impressive statistic can be replicated at other schools including Wakefield and Tapawera as soon as the cycle trail is completed and passes their gates. The final reason is that the trail will be cheap to run and be great value for ratepayers’ money. Although there has been some debate about maintenance costs of the trail, with council estimating $200,000 per year and the Nelson-Tasman Cycle Trail Trust saying it will be $90,000 when in reality it will probably be somewhere in the middle, that represents a bargain. Compared to the cost of operating and maintaining roads, footpaths, parks and reserves, libraries which run into the millions, the cycle trail is a steal. Two years ago, council backpedalled on a decision to cut funding for the cycle trail from its Long Term plan for 2012 to 2019. That proved to be a smart move allowing the wonderful coastal section to be completed and ensuring the project maintained its momentum. Let’s hope councillors make another smart decision and reinstate the $600,000 for the cycle trail when they finalise next year’s annual plan. What are your thoughts? Email us at editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz.

Property insights Real estate databases Is the value of real estate databases overstated? Most real estate companies have huge databases of real estate contacts. These databases are created by recording contacts from open homes, enquiries, personal contacts, sales and buyers. Current buyers will be on all company databases. Buyers are keen to know of new listings. They are scanning the web sites every day and they are attending all of the open homes in their price bracket, so they will be known by all real estate companies. How many genuine buyers are there at any one time? Probably not as many as you may think and the amount will be price related. The number of properties sold every month is an indication of the

number of buyers that are in the market at any one time. Ensure your property is marketed in a way that will attract these buyers and choose an agent that has excellent people skills and has the ability to secure a fair market value for you. They come to Club Waimea on Thursdays to meet with friends, some they have known for years and others they have just met. Non-stop dancing Our line dance birthday weekend went really well. We had dancers come from Paihia, Auckland, Dunedin, Marlborough, West Coast, Christchurch and of course Nelson and Tasman. Mike and Chrissie Perkins, the Editors of the NZ Beat Line Dancing Magazine, from Christchurch were in attend-

ance. They came up to present Sue and Danuta, Club Section Leaders, with two of the three awards Sioux Dance won at the recent NZ Line Dance Awards held in Cambridge. ‘The best place to take a leak!’ carries the most extensive range of engine cooling products in New Zealand, from complete radiators and radiator tanks to radiator cores. There are 20 shops within the network and Richmond Exhausts and Radiators are the shop for the whole of the top of the South Island, from Kaikoura and West Coast north. As well as supplying

products, the Adrad network means you, as a customer, can get assistance anywhere in New Zealand. Richmond Exhaust and Radiator Specialists likes all interactions with customers to be lighthearted, honest and friendly. Their commitment to providing people with a genuine service is evident in their attitude towards

quoting on work. “We would rather over quote and talk in worst-case-scenario than underestimate to get the job in the door, because our priority is honesty, happy customers and quality products. Our pricing includes GST, not plus GST, so there are no hidden costs,” Sheena says. “We respect our customers

24/7 Fuel Stacy Bint, Knoxy, Bradley and Sheena Evans are the team at Richmond Radiator and Exhaust Specialists. They work on trucks, tractors, custom race cars, domestic, performance and vintage vehicles. You name it, they can fit an exhaust on it. That flexibility also applies to radiators. Bradley is their radiator specialist and can repair as well as replace. He can make anything, from your little car heaters radiator right through to radiators for log haulers, diggers and trucks to your daily commuter. Their competitive advantage

comes from Bradley’s 19 years experience in the radiator industry. He was trained by old-school technicians who worked on early vintage vehicles, and his skills go as far as hand fabricating and making a vintage radiator from scratch. “A lot of places will say no it’s stuffed, throw it away - you need to get another one. But if it’s repairable I’m your man,” says Bradley. Richmond Exhaust and Radiator Specialists are a part of the Adrad National Radiators network, which

CUS ON WAKEFIELD

Anzac Day at Wakefield Village Rev. Allan Wasley, Vicar of Wakefield with Murchison parish Over the eight years I have been attending these parades in the village hall then out at the cenotaph, they have always impressed me as wonderfully well attended family events. Groups like the pippins, guides, scouts etc come dressed in uniform with their own poppies etc. The R.S.A. now find their parades consist of our final ww2 vet, Ira, and vets from the conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Timor and Afghanistan. What makes it so heart warming, is the buyin from the community to celebrate the victories which have given us peace. Having the service at 10am means all ages can come and reflect on the sacrifices made, the lives given, and the wonderful gift of freedom we enjoy in NZ. Historically ministers and priest were called padres in the forces and gave solace and comfort to those in the battle far from home, in sickness and in death. The hope of the victory of Christ at Easter has often given these soldiers a faith to hold on to, the promise of life beyond death, and the encouragement that they

were not on their own. We do hope there will be a great turn out again this 25 April, so that a new generation recalls the sadness of war, but also the triumph of standing up for what is right, and the sharing between Kiwi and Aussies that mean we remain the best of mates when attacked. Wakefield Rest Home welcomes new manager Three months ago Melinda Kelly joined the staff at Wakefield Rest Home as the new Rest Home Manager which is now benefiting from her love of the place, the people and the job. Melinda previously worked overseas as a district nurse for a home care company and started in Wakefield in January. “I just really love it here, the residents and locals are so welcoming and the staff are all great to work with. They are loyal and dedicated to their job which is a vital part of the homely atmosphere. I just couldn’t think of a better place to work.” Melinda says. Right now the rest home is focusing on welcoming the community back into its fold. “We want the community to feel free to come in and take the residents out, bring in

crafts to show to them or just play your favourite instrument.” Wakefield Rest Home are so lucky being close to the local shops the residents are free to come and go without being restricted to the home. They welcome you to visit anytime. A snapshot of Wakefield Real Estate Wendy Pearson, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson, Heyward Realty Ltd (REAA) Wakefield is proving a popular destination for home buyers with many people moving to Wakefield to enjoy the friendly community and village atmosphere. In the current real estate market, we are finding we have a burst of buyer activity in response to new listings, and busy initial open homes, and then buyer enquiry generally goes much quieter for the duration of the listing period. For this reason it is especially important to market your home at the correct price as over priced properties can sit on the market for a while. We are often getting just one or two serious buyers in those first few weeks of marketing, and if you aren’t under offer

Wakefield Rest Home

Where it’s the care that counts

Introducing New Manager Melinda Kelly Our warm, sunny and friendly rest home is in the heart of Wakefield Village with a reserve on one side, the health centre on the other and the shops and cafés right at the end of the driveway. It’s like living at home, not in a hotel. 10 Edward Street, Wakefield Ph 541 8995 email manager@wrh.co.nz It’s worth the journey

at the start of the marketing process, it can take a bit longer to find that perfect buyer. When we reduce the price of the properties not under offer in that first month of marketing, we sometimes find we have more than one offer at the new price. So buyers are around, they are just very “price sensitive” and usually well informed as to market conditions and prices. If you are looking for excellent value for your money, and a welcoming and friendly community, come to Wakefield for your next home.

Three-legged dog needs a foster home Jet has had a tough life. The five-month-old labrador-staffy cross was hit by a car and lost a back leg and then ended up homeless in the Motueka SPCA. But now things are finally looking up. Jet has been selected for The Ark’s training programme which started this week and is getting plenty of love from his new best friend and the rest of the team at the Ark. Celebrate Easter Just a thought

By Nitika Ennion, Grace Church When I think of Easter I get so excited! Yes the chocolate is exciting, and so is the thought of a long weekend chilling with my family. But what is more exciting is the fact that Easter is a time to celebrate a climactic point of time in history. It is a season to reflect on the fact that since the beginning of time, God had a purpose to redeem mankind, to draw them back to Himself. So we celebrate! Yes, the suffering of Jesus on the cross was something to mourn. But, the reality is that the cross was not the final resting place for Jesus. The story of Easter does not finish there. Jesus rose again and is now alive and seated in heaven. Right now that is His position! What does this mean for us? Well Jesus said that when He went to heaven He would send the Counselor - the Holy Spirit. He hasn’t gone to heaven and abandoned us here on earth. When we accept Him into our lives His Spirit comes to live in us.

Jesus died so that we might live! So are you living? Are you really living in the freedom that Christ paid for you when He died on the cross? Or are you living under the burdens of worry, guilt, fear, loneliness or anything else the world can throw at us? Yes, these are all real circumstances in our lives. But God is a real God! He has the power to save, the power to restore, the power to redeem broken lives. The Bible says that “If the Son sets you free then you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36). Jesus didn’t die on the cross so that we would just get by. He said “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10). I don’t know about you, but when I look back on my life, I want to see a life that has been lived outrageously in the fullness of all that Jesus paid for on the cross. He did it for you and for me. This Easter let’s celebrate the life and freedom that Jesus bought for us and let’s live it with all we’ve got!

You can join the Easter celebrations at Our Lady of Perpetual Help at 35 William St, Richmond and St Joseph’s Church, Pitfure Rd, Wakefield.

The devil is in the details By Fr David Gruschow I don’t know about you, but it seems that every time I am going somewhere for a few days, it takes ages to work through the innumerable little tasks that suddenly present themselves. If I don’t do this carefully, then I am bound to leave something undone that must really be done, or leave something behind that is vital! As has been said, ‘the devil is in the details!’ Perhaps it is the same with the story of Easter. You might remember the accounts of the devastated women and men followers of Jesus. How their grief was turned to joy with the stupendous news of the resurrection of Jesus from the

dead. The little ‘details’ in the stories are vital, for they lend credence to what is truly extraordinary. What is also tru-

ly extraordinary is the consequent offer of new life now to each and every one of us and

our loved ones, living here on earth - or living in eternity. Those details in the resurrection story then are significant as are the details in our own story as well. Each of us I’m sure can remember times when our sorrow, our dread, our fear, our frustration were turned unexpectedly to joy and peace. These are times when we become aware in a special way that God is at work in our lives. God just loves bringing us that newness, vitality and joy that we all yearn for: God loves accomplishing that personal and communal transformation that is an essential part and promise of the Easter story.

Murchison withdraw Down to “the bare bones”, Murchison have pulled out of senior rugby, relinquishing the chance to defend the division two championship they have won for the past two years. With just 13 players committing at the start of the 2014 season, club president and coach Tony Peacock says the writing was on the wall. “It’s very disappointing. We’ve lost a lot of players from last year through retirement, injuries, guys moving away, but we just lost too many,” he says. “We just couldn’t get the numbers.” Murchison played just one game in the first three rounds of the Car Company division two competition, a 39-27 loss to Collingwood away. Tony says a school kid and a former player now living in Ashburton made one-off appearances to support the team. “A couple of weeks out from the start of the season we knew we’d be struggling, but then we had a couple more injuries which didn’t help. The writing was on the wall from the start.” The announcement is a huge blow for the club which had experienced its best ever years since forming back in 1906. Tony says Murchison has fielded a team in division two ever since 2006, having played in the now-defunct division three since 1995. It had previously entered in the Buller Rugby Union competition, and a Motueka-Golden Bay championship before that. After winning the competition over the past two years, coaches Mike Huxford and D’Arcy Grooby stood down, ending their spells on a high. Tony was set to take over, but will now have to wait an entire season before getting a shot. Tony says some of the senior players are likely to register with Tapawera, Wanderers or Marist now, and although the numbers were low in junior rugby, the club was commit-

Q: I’m not looking forward to the

power price increase. Do you have any tips to help me keep my power bill in check? A: As we approach winter the two biggest contributors to your power bill will be hot water and space heating. Here are some ideas for saving money: Make sure you are with the cheapest power provider for your needs by going to: powerswitch.org.nz. Check that the temperature of your hot water cylinder is not set too high; 55°C is high enough. Insulate your hot water cylinder.  Check for cylinder leaks. Conserve hot water eg. short showers & cold machine washes. Heat pumps are cheaper than any other electric heater. Only use the heat pump or heater when needed. Check that the heat pump is set to Heat, NOT Auto or Cool. Unflued gas heaters are the most expensive to run, make your home damp and emit toxic fumes.  Turn appliances off at the wall.  Use energy efficient light bulbs.  Dry your clothes outside. Pre-season action for netball teams It was a weekend for fine tuning, with netball teams competing in the annual Geraldine Hodgson Tournament as they prepare for the upcoming season. Thirty teams competed in five grades over the two days. As there were only four entries in the A Grade, the teams played only on Sunday. A round-robin was played with four quarters of ten minutes each. Central Men from Blenheim won the grade as they swept all before them with their physical presence and sheer speed through court. While Jacks OPD had the experience of the Mainland Super Club competition some weeks ago, Sunday’s games were another opportunity to fine tune their roster. Jacks went on to defeat Prices Pharmacy A and Prices Pharmacy Black to finish second. Nelson College for Girls beat Garin College in the B Grade, while Huia won the C grade and Rival Jade took out the D and E Grades respectively.

Waimea hope for a good Friday Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys will be hoping for an early Easter gift when they take on the unbeaten Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers on Good Friday. But Wanderers are unlikely to be in the giving mood, having been embarrassed in last year’s Car Company division one final 55-21, the last time the two teams met. Wanderers are the competition’s form team, and have beaten Marist, Nelson, Stoke and Kahurangi in the past four weeks. While Waimea’s record is just one short of perfect, having lost to

Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Marist 33-17 on the weekend, co-coach Mark Milne concedes the favourtism tag is probably in the Wanderers camp. “They’re the form side. They always are at this time of the year,” he says. “They’re always well prepared earlier than most teams and they’ve got bugger all personnel changes from last year. It will be tough.”

But he fell short of saying Wanderers will have something to prove following last year’s final. “I’m not too sure, you’ll have to ask them that. The motivation for us is that we’ve got to turn it around from last week and that’s where our motivation comes from. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing, we just have to put a better performance out there.” Mark was disappointed with his side’s error-ridden performance against a Marist side full of line breakers, with former Waimea flanker Dan Hytongue getting

bragging rights over his former side. “We just made too many mistakes and our defence was not up to the standard it should be. I think it’s more an attitude thing.” The only positive Mark took out of the match was from the scrum at set-piece time, and he says the team has realised it will need to continue working hard if they plan to emulate last year’s success. “We’ve got to work a bit harder and come up to the level that’s required.” This Friday’s game kicks off at 3pm at Jubilee Park.

Callan Gibson makes a run through the middle of the field before being tackled by his opposite.

Bs continue perfect start to season With Murchison dropping out of the Car Company division two competition, Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys have quickly become the team to beat. Last year’s beaten finalists have won their first four games of the season, all by big margains, but co-coach Wayne Bateman says it’s sad to see Murchison pull out after two seasons as champions. “I’d rather have them there. Murchison was the team to beat and for us we need to set a

benchmark. But now we’ve got no one to set that on,” he says. “Collingwood and Takaka and Wanderers are probably the teams to beat at the moment.” Waimea have lost about seven players from last year’s squad, with some moving up to the division one side, and others moving out of town. But the idea of going one better than last year hasn’t crossed the coach’s mind just yet. “Let’s just cruise along steadily and build on the things

we’re doing wrong. Then we’ll hit our peak around semi finals/finals time.” Waimea will take on Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers this Thursday night in Brightwater, and Wayne believes it will be the toughest match of the season, even though Wanderers have lost two matches already. “She’s gonna be a pretty tough match on Thursday night. This is the Battle of the Bridge and both sides step up for it.”

Ensuring there is a range of accessible and affordable housing forms in Richmond is a significant issue for the community. Would you like to play a part in considering how this is achieved? The Council is setting up an advisory group to facilitate community and professional involvement in the Richmond Residential Density project. The advisory group will assist in the consideration of where and how higher density housing in Richmond should be managed by the Council. Nominations for membership of the advisory group are being invited from people with an interest in Richmond’s housing market. The 14 member group will be made up of nine external representatives from relevant professional bodies, the community and Iwi together with one ward Councillor and four Council officers. The key document informing the advisory group is the Richmond Urban Density Investigation Report of 2012. A person seeking membership can be self-nominated or nominated by another person or organisation, however members will be appointed as individuals, not as organisation representatives. Nominees should fill out the online application or print out the pdf version and send it to the Council. Go to www.tasman.govt.nz and search ‘Richmond Density’. Nominations must be received by 4.00 pm, Thursday 17 April 2014.
